Sight Words: run, said, it

We do numerous activities with these words throughout the week. We will also learn sight word songs.

Letter of the Week: Ee

Previous Letters: Ll, Aa, Ff, Tt, Pp, Bb, Ss, Cc, Nn, Gg

Remember to have your child cut out images from the newspaper or magazines that begin with our letter of the week so we can make our letter book.

We will go over the short (egg) and long (equal) sounds.

Morning Meeting:

  • This week students will do the Hit the Floor Greeting, Gingerbread Poem Shared Reading Activity, and for sharing the students will talk about what they want to be when they grow up.

    • The Sharing Schedule is linked above, please help prepare your child for sharing by talking with them about what they would like to be when they grow up and why.

Literacy/Literacy Centers:

  • What we will be doing at centers this week:

    • Teacher Time – Guided Reading

    • Word Work – Rainbow Words, Read Around the Room, Short /e/ matching

    • Listening – Listen to The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School and draw about the characters

    • Writing – If the fox hadn’t caught the gingerbread man…, My favorite gingerbread story was…

    • Computer – Starfall

    • Read to Self and Read to Someone – Students are focusing on finding sight words while reading

  • A skill we will be working on this week is identifying what happened at the beginning of the story

  • List words that begin with/have the short /e/, list words that begin with/have the long /e/

  • Practice writing upper and lowercase Ee

  • Sorting words between long /e/ and short /e/

  • Complete the predictable sentence, “‘It can run ________,’ said _______ (their name).” This will be made into another one of our wonderful class books

  • Practice our Who Let the Letters Out? song. It is linked on The Things to Work on at Home page above

  • Math Journals – Students will now have weekly math journals. They are a question of the day for students to complete at the beginning of our math time


  • If I were the gingerbread boy/man/girl…

  • Students will decorate a gingerbread house on paper and write about their gingerbread house

  • Students will write about eating a gingerbread cookie in three steps: first, next, last

  • Independent journals

Theme (Science/Social Studies): Gingerbread Stories

  • We will read numerous versions of the Gingerbread Man story – Bear, Library, Baby, Friends

  • Each day we will fill out a chart with the characters from the story, the setting, and the refrain

  • We will compare and contrast as we go

  • We will go on a hunt for our missing gingerbread man cookie (shhh, this is a surprise!). Students will write about where they think the gingerbread man cookie is based on the clues he has left

Things to Know:

  • Please check regularly and use the Things To Be Working On At Home link to above.

  • We have started a program called ST Math. Many of the students refer to it as JiJi Math. JiJi is the penguin they do math activities with. I have sent home the instructions for how the students can do math with JiJi at home. They must know their password, however some students are still learning it (eight pictures in order). I am not assigning homework for ST Math right now, but please feel free to let your child work on the program at home. If you can, sit with them and ask them what they are doing/learning.

  • Pennies for the Philippines is something Ray School is doing to raise money for the people impacted by the typhoon in the Philippines. Please consider donating any amount. I will be collecting the money which will be sent through the Red Cross before winter break.

  • It is that time if the year where students start bringing lots of articles of clothing with them to recess. It is very important that students can independently put their outside gear on. Please practice if they are unable to.

  • Second quarter progress reports will be sent home this week.

  • There is no school Dec. 23 – Jan. 3 for winter break

  • Library books are due every Tuesday.

  • If you would like to volunteer in the classroom just let me know. The most needed time is literacy centers, but volunteers are welcomed at all other times of the school day. If you would like to work something out regularly or just every once in a while, let me know. We would love to have you!
