We really learned the importance of hand washing with our apple germ experiment. On Monday we placed an untouched apple in a bag and in a different bag was an apple we put our dirty hands all over. We watched all week and this is what it looked like on Friday:

We will use and write them in sentences. We will also learn sight word songs.

Letter of the Week: Tt

Previous Letters: Ll, Aa, Ff

Remember to have your child cut out images from the newspaper or magazines that begin with our letter of the week so we can make our letter collage/book throughout the week.

Morning Meeting:

  • This week students will do the Adjective Greeting, Monster Poem Shared Reading Activity, and Favorite Picture Sharing.

Literacy/Literacy Centers:

  • We will rotate between read to self, read to someone, word work, and writing centers

  • Complete the predictable sentence of “I like to ______ and ______” to be filled in with two things each student likes to do. Students will cut out the words and glue them in order along with drawing a corresponding picture. So far all of these predictable sentences have been made into wonderful class books that the students love reading

  • List words that begin with /t/ and find words beginning with /t/ around the room

  • Practice writing uppercase and lowercase /t/

  • Rainbow write our sight words

  • Write our sight words using wikki stix

  • Use cards to make simple CVC (consonant vowel consonant – cat, hit, pot) words then write the word and draw a picture

  • For our Journeys curriculum students will listen to a read aloud of Everybody Works and our skills are text/graphic features and analyze/evaluate.

  • Listen to read alouds and participate in class discussions.

  • Practice our Who Let the Letters Out? song. It is linked on The Things to Work on at Home page above.

Math:

  • Estimation Jar

  • Number Stories: Stage 1

  • Symmetry Painting

  • Symmetry in Nature

  • Ten Frames

  • For math, after we complete our math survey we do a whole group lesson on the above topic. Students then rotate between centers with their tables. One table is the above topic (one each day) and this week the other centers will include: teen spin it/read it/write it, matching coin game, missing number, and color/count/graph

Writing:

  • Students will be continue to independent journal this week. We will use our how to make a wow picture anchor chart and our list of topics to write/draw about. This week students will continue labeling around 5 details in their pictures. Students are encouraged to draw very detailed pictures and the students who can write words will be encouraged to do so. All students will be encouraged to draw pictures dealing with our sight words so they can use those words in sentences.

Theme (Science/Social Studies): Our theme this week is Community

  • Police Officer/Safety Signs – we will read about both police officers and safety signs, students will then cut and glue the safety sign into the appropriate picture

  • Firefighters – we will read books about firehouses, fire engines, and firefighters then students will do a color by sight word fire engine

  • Medical Professionals (doctors, nurses, EMS, Veterinarians) – after reading about these professions students will pick which one they would like to do then draw and write about it

  • Grocer – students will make a list of grocery items and sort them into categories

  • Bus Driver and Cross Walker – students will draw and write about proper ways to act when on the bus or crossing the street and improper ways to act

  • Scholastic Book Orders are due online or to me by October 18th. This is a great way to get some wonderful books for home and help earn the classroom points so we can get more wonderful books and resources.

  • School starts promptly at 8:45 a.m. Many students are coming tardy and are missing very important parts of our Morning Meeting. Not only are they missing part of the lesson but it is also a distraction to the rest of us who have already started the school day. It is very important to be at school on time.

  • Thank you so much to all the family members that have filled out the volunteer form. Volunteers in the classroom are such a great help. If you find yourself with a day off and want to brave the world of a kindergarten classroom for a short time, let me know. If you find yourself available, just email me if you would like to come in and help.

  • There is no school on Monday, Oct. 14th in observance of Columbus Day
