Letter of the Week: We have completed all letters and will be focusing on the cvc (consonant vowel consonant) spelling pattern with a focus on the vowel in the middle, which in this pattern is short

Theme: Our theme this week is snails and worm

  • We will have two types of worms and one type of snail in our classroom starting this week!

  • We will learn about the parts of a snail, then make a snail and label the parts

  • The students will write about the parts of a snail and what those parts do

  • Complete an observation journal of the snails

  • Parts of a worm

  • Complete a worm tree map, focusing on what worms can do, have, and are

Journals:

  • Independent Journals with a focus on stories that have a beginning, middle, and end

  • Students will make their own version of Diary of a Worm, based on the book Diary of a Worm

  • This week our phonics lessons will focus on the cvc spelling pattern with a focus on short /a/ in the middle and changing the short vowel sound in the middle.

Math:

  • Writing number models for number stories

  • Make a class number storybook with addition models

  • Make a class number storybook with subtraction models

  • Money exchange

  • Math money cube

  • Division of whole objects into halves, fourths, and thirds- students will make a paper cookie and split it equally into halves, fourths, or thirds

  • Marshmallow and toothpick shapes

Literacy/Literacy Centers:

  • Writing Center: Rainbow write our sight words and at the pond pick a prompt.

  • Art Center: Use watercolors to make a worm and its habitat.

  • Math Center: Match it number sentences.

  • Listening Center: Listen to Arthur Goes to Camp.

  • ABC Center: Match a word to a picture.

  • Read Around the Room: Students will find words that have short /a/ in the middle of cvc pattern words.

  • During Teacher Time this week I will finish administering the end of the year dibels exam in both math and reading and administer the end of the year Reach assessment

Social Studies:

  • How the Sky Got Its Name (Legend).

  • Scholastic Book Club Orders are due on Friday, May 31st. This is the last book order of the school year.

  • Thank you to the wonderful chaperones we had for our zoo field trip!

  • No School Monday, May 27th for Memorial Day.

  • Let me know if you would like to volunteer your time in Room 104 during our literacy centers and math. I am looking for volunteers daily until 11:15 am. You can come for any or all of that time.
