Theme: Our theme this week is zoo animals

  • Complete a tree map about zebras, writing what they can do, have, and are

  • Compare and contrast lions and tigers

  • Complete a tree map about chimpanzees, writing what they can do, have, and are

  • Listen to I Love Animals and participate on a discussion

  • We will have a guest speaker come and talk to us about chimpanzees and what it is like to work with them

Journals:

  • Independent Journals

  • My Imaginary Animal – put two animals together and write about their habitat and what they can do

  • Monkeying Around – students will write a narrative about a time they did something silly

  • If you were a zookeeper…

  • This week our phonics lessons will focus on words that start with /z/ and coming up with sentences that start with the question words: who, what, where, when, why, and how.

Math:

  • Skip count by 2’s, 5‘s, and 10’s on the calculator

  • Identifying halves and wholes

  • After listening to Animals on Board we will work on solving word problems with pictures

  • Division of whole objects into halves – students will also make paper cookies, one with the chocolate chips split equally in half and on not

Literacy/Literacy Centers:

  • Writing Center: Rainbow write our sight words A Zaney Zoo pick a prompt.

  • Art Center: Make a zebra face with black paper and a paper plate.

  • Math Center: Halves.

  • Listening Center: Listen to Arthur’s Family Vacation.

  • ABC Center: Sight Word Graphing.

  • Read Around the Room: Students will find words that have a /z/ in the beginning around the room and in books and write them down.

  • During Teacher Time this week I will administer the end of the year dibels exam in both math and reading

Social Studies:

  • How the Sky Got Its Name (Legend).

Reminders:

  • Scholastic Book Club Orders are due on Monday, May 13th.

  • Thank you to all the families for donating money so the students and I can choose books for our classroom from the book fair.

  • Our field trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo is on Friday, May 17th. Students are to have a completely disposable lunch that day. Permission slips and money are due. I will be contacting chaperones this week.

  • No School Monday, May 27th for Memorial Day.

  • Let me know if you would like to volunteer your time in Room 104 during our literacy centers and math. I am looking for volunteers daily until 11:15 am. You can come all or part of that time.

  • Our librarian, Mrs. Travis, has informed me that she will no longer be sending traveling library book bags home for the rest of the school year. If you have any traveling book bags at home it would be very helpful if they were returned. Students with the white bag will still be able to check out a book, if you have misplaced your white bag Ms. Travis will replace it if she receives a written note.

  • Wish List: glue sticks, gallon size ziplock bags, disinfectant wipes.
