Theme: Our theme this week is ladybugs and dragonflies

  • Continue to sing the song about the structure of an insect’s body

  • Be an Entomologist, then do a tree map on what they can do, are, have, and study

  • Make a diagram of a ladybug

  • Make a dragonfly out of popsicle sticks and make a habitat for it

  • Read In the Tall, Tall Grass then make their own tall, tall grass and bugs to go with it

  • Read numerous fiction and non-fiction books about ladybugs, dragonflies, and insects


  • Independent Journals

  • All about ladybugs

  • What is in your tall, tall grass? – to go along with the project made earlier

  • This week our phonics lessons will focus on words that start with /y/, end with /y/, and we will revisit /y/ as /i/ and /y/ as /e/.


  • Counting by 2’s

  • Insect subtraction

  • Insect measuring

  • Ladybug addition

  • Counting up and down by 10’s on a 100’s chart

Literacy/Literacy Centers:

  • Writing Center: Rainbow write our sight words and My Favorite Bug.

  • Art Center: Find our sight words in magazines, glue them, write them.

  • Math Center: Adding with 2 dice.

  • Listening Center: Listen to If You Give a Dog a Donut then write a sentence about the book and draw a picture.

  • ABC Center: Word Families.

  • Read Around the Room: Students will find words that have an /y/ in the beginning  or end around the room and in books and write them down.

  • During Teacher Time this week I will administer the end of the year dibels exam in both math and reading

Social Studies:

  • Character Education – Calming Down and Strong Feelings.

  • How the Sky Got Its Name (Legend).

  • Scholastic Book Club Orders are due on Monday, May 13th.

  • Wednesday, May 8th is a half day. Students will be dismissed at 12:15 pm on the south playground having eaten lunch at school.

  • Family Science Project (Insect Research) is due Wednesday, May 8th. All kindergarten classes will be presenting their projects to each other on that same day.

  • The Ray School Book Fair will be held in the teacher lunchroom in the basement from May 6th – May 10th. We will go twice, once so students can make their own wish list and again to purchase books (Friday, May 10th). The Book Fair is also open before and after school.

  • Thank you to all the families for donating money so the students and I can choose books for our classroom from the book fair.

  • Our field trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo is on Friday, May 17th. Permission slip and money are due on Friday, May 10th. Let me know if you would like to chaperone, there are still spaces available.

  • Let me know if you would like to volunteer your time in Room 104 during our literacy centers and math. I am looking for volunteers daily until 11:15 am.

  • Our librarian, Mrs. Travis, has informed me that she will no longer be sending traveling library book bags home for the rest of the school year. If you have any traveling book bags at home it would be very helpful if they were returned. Students with the white bag will still be able to check out a book, if you have misplaced your white bag Ms. Travis will replace it if she receives a written note.

  • Wish List: glue sticks, gallon size ziplock bags, disinfectant wipes.
