Room 104 Families,

Sight Words: can, be, and
Previous Sight Words: I, like, see, the, is, little, big, a, to, we
We are going to use and write these words in sentences.
We have been learning songs for all our sight words, ask your student to share the songs with you!
Letter of the Week: Hh
Previous Letters: Kk, Pp, Jj

Theme: Our theme this week is Halloween

  • We will make a classroom Jack-o-Lantern. Students will vote on what they want all the different parts to look like then I will carve the pumpkin.
  • Students will make a skeleton out of q-tips.

Halloween Party:

  • Students may come dressed in costume on Halloween, but no masks or weapons.
  • Students may bring candy to hand out to classmates, but they will not be eating it in school. All treats will be sent home. Feel free to send a trick or treat bag to school that day.
  • The students will do Halloween coloring sheets while passing out treats, then all of kindergarten will watch It’s A Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
  • Please refer to previous post as to our literacy/Halloween celebration in the morning. Email me if you can donate your time or materials.


  • We are part of the Fall Assembly!
  • Dress your child in all black on Friday. The performance is at 2:00 pm in the auditorium and all parents are invited to attend.


  • Student will complete their October Journals and start their November Journals. All completed journals are kept at school and will be given to you at Report Card Pick Up.
  • I will encourage using our sight words and students writing one word to describe their picture.
  • It is very important that students spell words how they hear the sounds. Encourage your child to stretch out the word and write down the sounds they hear. Students often spell home as HOM, because those are the sounds you hear. This is developmental and what we are looking for.
  • Students will practice writing the letter /h/.


  • Students will make a shape collage with objects cut from magazines and newspapers.
  • Students will name shapes without looking at them, just feeling.
  • Which Way do I Go? We will learn about and do activities with the following vocabulary words: top, below, next to, between, behind, in front of, around, over, under, inside, outside, above, beside, up, and down.
  • Matching numbers with a spin game.

Literacy/Literacy Centers:

  • Writing Center: Students will be be doing /h/ phonics practice and rainbow words. Rainbow words – writing the sight words using many different colors.
  • Art Center: Students will cut any of our sight words out of magazines, glue it on paper, and write the word.
  • Math Center: Money Sort.
  • Read Around the Room: Students will find words in our classroom and in books that start with the letter /h/ and write them down.
  • Listening Center: Students will listen to a story for the second time and draw a picture of the main character.
  • ABC Center: Students will practice writing different letters and coloring in pictures that start with that letter.
  • For reference, our literacy centers consist of listening center, writing center, art center, computer center, math center, read around the room, games, ABC center (phonics games), books center, blocks, and teacher time. Most centers change their content weekly and deal with our theme, sight words, and/or letter of the week.
  • We do many different things at Teacher Time center. One day a week the groups work on phonics and sight words with me. That day they also take a picture walk through their weekly story. We work on the weekly story for two days and on the last day we work with a social studies text or do more phonemic awareness.
  • The students will create a class book completing the following sentence: I can be a  ___________________ (to be filled in with what they are for Halloween or something they can be).
  • For our Journeys curriculum we will read a story called Everybody Works. Our goal this week is text and graphic features since it is a non fiction book.

Social Studies:

  • This week we will learn about how to solve a problem.


  • Continue talking to your child about appropriate behaviors when playing with other children and on the playground.
  • We will not be attending Library this week due to our Halloween party. Please do not send library books.
  • Ray School collects box tops for education. These are on many items bought regularly at the grocery store. Please cut them out of the box and send to school in your child’s red folder. I will then add them to the collection in the office.
  • Thank you to the families who bought books through Scholastic this month. Not only is it a great and cheap way to get books for your kids, it also helps me to get more and important books for our theme study, books center, and listening center.
